Location :
Lake Qarun is located in the northwestern part of the Wadi Al Rayan depression. It is considered one of the oldest natural lakes in the world and is the rest of the old Maurice Lake.
Area:
Its area is about 55 thousand feddans, its depth ranges from 5-12 meters, and the water surface level is 45 meters, and its salinity ranges from 32-35 g / l.
The environmental composition and features of the reserve:
* The northern part of the lake includes the area of Jabal Qatrani, a rocky limestone area that contains important mammary fossils, around 3-10 million years old, in which excavations of the oldest monkey in the world, "the Egyptian monkey" and some fossil trees appeared.
* There are some important geological formations scientifically and historically in the northeast of the lake, as well as some water swamps that contain various plant groups.
* Many migratory birds resident in the winter migrate to the lake.
* There are some endemic species of fish in the lake, such as green tilapia, and they are transported and adapted, such as mossy and mullet, and some invertebrates, such as white shrimp.
* There are some archaeological areas located on the shores of the lake, including Pharaonic and Roman, such as the churches, the Temple of Sagha, the Temple of Qarun, the area of Ahrit and the monastery of Apollifeh, among others, as well as some ancient geological areas with plant and animal fossils.
